Amsler Grid Test

Self-test for the early detection of macular diseases

The Amsler grid test is a simple self-test for the early detection of diseases affecting the macula – the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.

It helps you identify whether straight lines appear distorted, bent or interrupted, which may indicate macular degeneration or other macular conditions.

This test does not replace a professional eye examination. If you notice any abnormalities, we recommend prompt ophthalmological assessment.

How to perform the test

  • Wear your glasses or contact lenses if you normally use them for reading
  • Hold the grid at reading distance (approximately 30–40 cm) in daylight.
  • Cover one eye without pressing on it.
  • Focus on the dot in the centre with the uncovered eye.
  • Observe whether lines appear distorted, bent, blurred or interrupted.
  • Repeat the test with the other eye.
